Germany: Suspicious Man Shot Near Nazi Museum, Israeli Consulate

On September 5, 2024, a suspicious man was shot dead by Munich police near a Nazi-era museum and the Israeli consulate in the Karolinenplatz area. The man was deemed suspicious due to the long-barreled gun he appeared to be carrying. The police responded to the situation around 9 a.m., exchanging fire with the suspect, who was seriously injured and later died.

Police have secured the area around the Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism (NS-Dokumentationszentrum) and have advised the public to avoid the vicinity. The area has been cordoned off, and additional police have been deployed. Authorities have stated that there is no indication of other suspects or threats to nearby locations.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the consulate in Munich was closed at the time of the shooting, and no staff were injured. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser described the incident as serious and emphasized the high priority of protecting Jewish and Israeli facilities. She noted ongoing communication with emergency services but did not provide further details.

The shooting took place on the 52nd anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack, in which Palestinian militants targeted the Israeli delegation, resulting in the deaths of 11 Israeli team members, a West German police officer, and five of the attackers. While this timing raises concerns, it is not yet clear if there is any direct connection between the shooting and the anniversary. Authorities are actively investigating to determine if the shooting was related to the historic attack or if it was an isolated incident.
