Nitheesha Kandula, a 23-year-old student from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), has been missing since May 28. She was last seen in Los Angeles and was reported missing on May 30. John Guttierez, the Chief of Police at CSUSB, announced the news in a post on X, seeking public assistance in finding her. This incident is part of a troubling trend of missing students within the Indian community in the US.

“#MissingPersonAlert: California State University, San Bernardino Police, in collaboration with the LAPD, are seeking information on the whereabouts of CSUSB student Nitheesha Kandula. If you have any information, please contact us at (909) 537-5165,” the police announced.
Police Description for Missing Student Nitheesha Kandula
Nitheesha Kandula is describe as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 160 pounds (72.5 kg), with black hair and black eyes. According to the police, she might be driving a 2021 Toyota Corolla with a California license plate, though the color of the car is unknown.
“Authorities urge anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact the CSUSB Police Department at (909) 538-7777, or the LAPD’s Southwest Division at (213) 485-2582.” Last month, 26-year-old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind, an Indian student, was report missing in Chicago.
Series of Tragic Incidents Involving Indian Students in the United States
The Indian community in the United States has witnessed a series of tragic incidents involving students and professionals in recent months.
In April, authorities discovered the body of 25-year-old Mohammad Abdul Arfath, an Indian student pursuing a Masters in IT at Cleveland University, in Cleveland, Ohio, after he had been missing since March.
March, 34-year-old Amarnath Ghosh, a trained classical dancer from India, fell victim to a fatal shooting in St Louis, Missouri, further exacerbating the distressing trend.
In February, authorities recovered the body of 23-year-old Indian-American student Sameer Kamath in a nature preserve in Indiana, marking another heartbreaking loss.
Just days earlier, on February 2, Vivek Taneja, a 41-year-old Indian-origin IT executive, suffered life-threatening injuries during an assault outside a restaurant in Washington.
Tragically, the year began with the death of 18-year-old Akul Dhawan, a student at the University of Illinois, who was found unresponsive outside a campus building in January. Investigations revealed that hypothermia, exacerbated by acute alcohol intoxication and exposure to extremely cold temperatures, led to his untimely demise.
