South Koreans Set To Become Younger As Traditional Way Of Counting Age Scrapped

South Korea has surprised the world by passing a law that will allow its citizens to be either a year or two younger. The country has scraped the traditional method of counting age and has adopted the international method. This has brought a welcoming change among their citizens and may have already been on board with this idea.

Koreans become a year old when they are born and a year is added on the 1st of January. Everyone uses this age in everyday life. There is a separate system for conscription purposes or to calculate the legal age to smoke or consume alcohol and in this, a person’s age is calculated from zero at birth and a year is added on the 1st of January every year.

For medical and legal purposes, South Korea has been calculating a person’s age from zero at birth and adding a year to every birthday. The new law of counting ages i.e the international method will fall in place from June 2023.
