The US military has launched attacks on armed groups backed by Iran in eastern Syria. The US has taken this action in response to rocket attacks on its military bases in Iraq.
“On the instructions of President Joe Biden, the US Military Forces has attacked the infrastructure of Iranian armed groups in eastern Syria,” US Defense Ministry spokesman John Kirby said.
It is said that about 17 fighters of Iran-backed armed groups have been killed in this action. The US spokesperson clearly stated that this action was taken in response to rocket attacks on US military bases in Iraq.
“This action has taken place in response to the recent attacks in Iraq on the military bases of American and NATO forces,” John Kirby said.
According to the Pentagon, US fighter jets have dropped 7 500-lb bombs targeting 7 targets. One of these destinations is the crossing along the border of Iran and Syria. The US says the crossing was used by Iran-backed militant groups for arms movements. Kirby said many of the bases of Iran-backed groups have been destroyed in these attacks. These groups include Qatayb Hizbollah and Qatayb Syed al-Suhada.
