Before Ramadan, the UAE demonstrated a significant act of mercy by granting large-scale pardons to prisoners. According to official orders, over 500 Indian nationals were among those released. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan approved the release of 1,295 inmates, while Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum granted clemency to 1,518 prisoners. The pardons were implemented in late February.
The clemency covers individuals of different nationalities in Dubai’s correctional facilities. Dubai’s Attorney General, Chancellor Essam Issa Al-Humaidan, emphasized that Sheikh Mohammed’s decision aims to provide a fresh start for rehabilitated prisoners.

Legal procedures underway
Dubai’s Attorney General confirmed that after the clemency, the Dubai Public Prosecution, in collaboration with Dubai Police, has initiated legal procedures for the prisoners’ release. The pardon aims to reunite them with their families and help them reintegrate into society.
This gesture reflects the UAE’s dedication to justice, compassion, and strong diplomatic ties with India. Upholding its annual tradition, the UAE grants pardons during Ramadan as a symbol of mercy and reconciliation, embracing the spirit of the Holy Month.
Government to fulfill financial commitments
In addition to granting pardons, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s government has committed to covering the financial obligations of the released prisoners. This initiative seeks to ease hardships for inmates and their families, fostering stability and enabling a fresh start free from financial strain.
As a longstanding tradition, the UAE’s annual Ramadan pardons highlight the nation’s dedication to mercy and second chances. Rooted in the values of the Holy Month, the gesture underscores forgiveness, compassion, and rehabilitation. Furthermore, the mass release helps lower prison populations, promoting social stability.
