US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan begins two-day visit to India

US National Security Adviser (NSA) Jake Sullivan began a two-day visit to India on Monday with a meeting with external affairs minister S Jaishankar, during which the two sides discussed bilateral, regional and global issues.

Sullivan Visits New Delhi for iCET Review

Sullivan is visiting New Delhi at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval for a long-pending review of the India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET). Earlier this year, Sullivan had called off planned visits to India twice because of the US administration’s preoccupation with the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Jaishankar and Sullivan Discuss Broad Issues

In a post on X following his meeting with Sullivan, Jaishankar mentioned that they had a “comprehensive discussion on a broad range of bilateral, regional, and global issues” but did not provide specific details.

Jaishankar expressed confidence that the India-US strategic partnership would continue to progress robustly during their new term, referencing the newly formed coalition government after the recent general election.

Sullivan was accompanied by a delegation of senior US government officials and industry leaders. According to sources who requested anonymity, the two NSAs regularly consult on various bilateral, regional, and global matters.

India-US Partnership Advances in New Technologies

“The current visit sustains their high-level engagement on the dynamic and multi-dimensional agenda of the India-US global strategic partnership,” said one of the aforementioned sources.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden launched the iCET during the Quad Summit in Tokyo in May 2022, the two NSAs have been leading a focused effort to collaborate in key areas of new and emerging technologies, such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, defense innovation, space, and advanced telecommunications.
