US Warns It Will Hold China Accountable If Russia Makes Gains In Ukraine

    Russia

On Tuesday, the US issued a warning, stating that it would hold China responsible for any territorial gains made by Russia in Ukraine. This warning came after Beijing reaffirmed its cooperation with Moscow during a visit by Russia’s top diplomat.

Kurt Campbell, the deputy secretary of state known for his involvement in reshaping US policy towards Asia, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Europe, describing it as the US’s foremost historical mission.

Amid a deadlock in the US Congress over approving more weapons to Ukraine, and with Moscow intensifying its offensive in Ukraine, Campbell cautioned that any Russian territorial advancements could disrupt the balance of power in Europe, which the US finds unacceptable.

US has directly informed China about the potential consequences

Campbell conveyed that the US has directly informed China about the potential consequences for the US-China relationship if Russia’s actions persist unchecked. He stressed that the US views the situation not just as Russia’s actions but as a collaborative effort involving China and North Korea, contrary to US interests.

Addressing Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s recent visit to China, during which President Xi Jinping expressed readiness to enhance coordination, Campbell highlighted that the Biden administration had previously alerted Chinese officials about intelligence indicating Russia’s intentions to invade Ukraine in February 2022. However, Campbell suggested that China may not have fully believed or comprehended the gravity of the situation at that time.

Campbell noted that China initially supported Russia defensively, aiming to prevent regime change. However, over the course of more than two years, Russia has significantly bolstered its capabilities, posing a substantial threat to Ukraine and the surrounding region. It has consistently threatened sanctions against China if it takes further actions to support Russia.
