Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei referred to women as “delicate flowers” rather than “housemaids” in a series of posts on December 18, marking the 45th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Women’s Bill of Rights in 1979. In response, Israel posted a picture on X showing a woman dressed entirely in black with her head covered. The post included no caption or identification of the woman.

On Thursday, Ali continued the discussion on Twitter, stating, “Men and women have distinct roles within the family. For instance, men handle the family’s financial responsibilities, while women take on the role of childbearing. This doesn’t signify superiority; these are different qualities, and the rights of men and women aren’t determined by these roles. “These remarks come amidst ongoing protests against strict hijab laws, which intensified following the death of Mahsa Amini.

Who is mahsa amini, whose image Israel posted
Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, a 22-year-old woman from Iran’s Kurdish minority, went to Tehran with her brother. During their visit, she was stopped and arrested by Iran’s “morality” police (gasht-e ershad), a force which detains women for violating the compulsory veiling laws. According to eyewitness reports, officers had violently forced Mahsa into a van and beat her before taking her to the Vozara detention center in Tehran. She was then taken into a detention center used to reform women.
