    Donald Trump

In their first presidential debate hosted by ABC News, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris clashed on topics ranging from abortion to wars, the economy, and the housing crisis. With just eight weeks until the election, the debate marked their first meeting and ended an eight-year handshake absence on the debate stage. Harris introduced herself to Trump, and when discussing the economy, she highlighted her middle-class background and plans to support families and small businesses. She criticized Trump for favoring “billionaires and big corporations” and reminded viewers of the economic situation he left behind, asserting, “Donald Trump has no plan for you.”

As the debate grew more intense, Trump criticized Harris on the Biden administration’s immigration record. Harris responded by accusing Trump of resorting to a “tired playbook” of lies and name-calling. She listed problems left by Trump, including high unemployment, a severe public health crisis, and an attack on democracy, claiming the current administration is cleaning up his mess.

Trump then made a personal attack, calling Harris a Marxist and alleging her father was one too, while Harris maintained a smile. Trump also claimed he hadn’t received enough credit for his pandemic response, asserting it was “phenomenal.”

On abortion, Harris warned that Trump would ban it if re-elected, to which Trump replied she was lying. He seemed caught off guard by a question about vetoing a national abortion ban, saying such a law wouldn’t pass Congress.

Shifting to immigration, Harris suggested Trump frequently discusses the topic and invited people to his rallies, noting that they often involve fictional characters and lead to bored attendees. Trump retorted that no one attends Harris’ rallies and brought up a bizarre social media claim about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Ohio, which made Harris laugh and shake her head.

Regarding Ukraine, Harris argued Trump would have surrendered to Putin, while Trump vaguely said he wants the war to end. When Trump linked Harris to Biden administration failures, she reminded him she’s not running against Biden. Trump also dismissed questions about Harris’s racial identity, which she criticized as a divisive tactic. Harris emphasized she represents new leadership, not Biden or Trump.
