    Yunus urged China to strengthen economic ties with Bangladesh, linking it to northeastern India

    During his recent visit to China, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus urged Beijing to expand its economic influence in Bangladesh. He controversially noted that India’s northeastern, landlocked states could offer an opportunity. The remark surfaced on social media after his four-day visit.

    He called Bangladesh the “only guardian of the ocean” in the region, suggesting this could be a significant opportunity for China’s economic expansion.

    Here’s what India said?

    Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of Prime Minister Modi’s economic advisory council, posted a video on X questioning Yunus’s mention of India’s northeastern region. He asked, “Why is Yunus making a public appeal to China based on the fact that seven Indian states are landlocked? China can invest in Bangladesh, but what’s the significance of this landlocked issue?”

    Important to see Beijing as good friend, says Yunus

    Yunus, while returning from China on Saturday, emphasized the importance of viewing China as a “good friend.” He highlighted the significance of strengthening ties with Beijing, positioning it as a balancing force against New Delhi in the region. Yunus expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, expecting them to enter a new phase.

    Yunus arrived in China on March 26 and attended the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference in Hainan. He also participated in several events on March 27. On Saturday, he received an honorary doctorate from Peking University (PKU) and delivered a lecture, according to the state-run news agency BSS.

    China, Bangladesh sign nine agreements

    On Friday, China and Bangladesh signed nine agreements following Yunus’ meeting with President Xi Jinping. During the meeting, Yunus discussed student protests in Dhaka that led to a regime change and urged China to play a “greater role” in ensuring peace and stability.

    Bangladesh also secured USD 2.1 billion in investments, loans, and grants from China. Additionally, the country invited Chinese companies to join the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), as stated in a joint announcement.
