Forced to purchase a carry bag for Rs 24.9 after shopping for over Rs 2,000 at an outlet in Nandini Layout, a Bengaluru man sued Reliance Retail Limited in a consumer court, which recently ruled in his favor.
The retail major was ordered to repay the customer the bag’s cost, apart from the compensation of Rs 7,000 for unfair trade practice and violation of customer rights.

On July 10, 2022, Nandini Layout resident Ravikiran C, 34, and his wife made an unplanned visit to Reliance Smart Point at Nandini Layout on the way back from a temple. The couple purchased groceries and other household items worth around Rs 2,007. But they were shocked to find the salespersons at the billing counter insisting that they pay Rs 24.9 for the carry bag. Despite arguing on the matter and speaking about the legal aspects based on customer rights, Ravikiran, an advocate, was forced into buying the bag as he had to take home the goods.
