Pune: Google search helped duo identify homes to rob; aide held, mastermind on the run

    Google search

Before meticulously selecting their targets for burglaries, they referred to Google search as ‘Rich societies in Pune.’ The mastermind behind these clever heists would travel to Pune, check into a hotel, and collaborate with an accomplice he had met in a Telangana prison. Following thorough reconnaissance of the surrounding areas, they would then break into secured houses in upscale housing societies. The accomplice was apprehended on December 12 in Telangana while attempting to escape the state, with details of the arrest made public on Tuesday.

Pune City police, after a meticulous investigation that involved scanning of over 300 security camera footages, arrested a suspect Narendra Babu Nunsavat (27) from Hyderabad in connection to three burglaries in Pune, wherein cash and valuables worth over Rs 60 lakhs were stolen over the last few months. The mastermind of the heists —Satish Babu Kari, also from Hyderabad— has been booked for burglaries and thefts in Telangana and is currently in custody in Telangana after his recent arrest. He is yet to be taken into custody by Pune police.

    Cracking the Case

A team from Yerawada police station was investigating a case of a break-in at a plush housing society in Kalyani Nagar wherein gold ornaments worth Rs 7.5 lakh and cash of Rs 2.5 lakhs was stolen in the first week of October. Investigation teams began looking into footage from various security cameras, which ultimately gave the police an important lead. It came to light that the same set of suspects was also involved in two back to back house break-ins in two flats in plush housing societies in Bhosale Nagar.

Police began looking into technical leads from the electronic trail of the suspects, and also activated their ground network of human intelligence. Once police identified Narendra, a team was sent to Telangana. On December 12, police arrested him while he was trying to flee the state. Details of the arrest were released to the press on Tuesday, after the initial probe was complete and some stolen items were recovered.

    Google-Guided Heists

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone 4), Shashikant Borate, said, “The prime suspect of the case used Google search to decide the target. They searched for ‘rich societies’ in Pune and then carefully studied the result to finalise their prey. The main suspect would fly to Pune while Narendra travelled by bus. The two would do a recce of the surrounding area and later break into the apartments.”

The investigation further unveiled their operating method. Upon arriving in Pune, they would lodge in hotels, and en route to the designated residential society, they strategically changed rickshaws at least five to six times to evade detection by CCTV cameras. Narendra, during his college days, had even attempted a police recruitment exam in Telangana. With more than two dozen cases individually registered against both Narendra and Satish, the two criminals initiated their collaborative efforts after crossing paths in a Telangana prison, according to the police.
