The results of the third edition of states’ startup ecosystem rankings were announced by Piyush Goyal. Kerala, for the third consecutive time was chosen as a top performer, along with Maharashtra, Orissa and Telangana.
For the purpose of ranking, states and Union Territories were classified into 5 Categories. Best Performers, Top Performers, Leaders, Aspiring Leaders and Emerging Start-up Ecosystems.
While Gujarat and Karnataka, emerged as the best performers among the states, Meghalaya won the top honour among Union Territories. On the other hand, Jammu and Kashmir bagged the Top Performer tag among UTs. Assam, Punjab, Tamil Nādu, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh were adjudged the winners in the Leaders category among states, while Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa bagged the Leaders honour among the UTs and NE states.
Reacting to the rankings, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said that Kerala has been awarded the Top Performer Award for 2021 in the Centre’s States Startup Ranking due to its emphasis on developing a robust startup environment.
“As part of the award announcement, the committee lauded the state government’s promotion of activities like the Kerala Startup Mission as a digital hub for product design and development activities,” noted Vijayan.
DPIIT has been conducting the States’ Start-up Ranking Exercise since 2018. It is done to facilitate the ease of building a start-up and doing business across the country. It aims to support states and union territories in developing their start-up ecosystem. And learn from the best practices in each state and union territory.
