Adhir Ranjan’s remark on President triggers protest in Parliament

Parliament Monsoon Session Live News Updates: The BJP Thursday slammed Congress for demeaning the ‘women and tribals of India’ after Opposition leader and Congress MP Adhir Ranjan referred to President of India Droupadi Murmu as ‘Rashtrapatni.’ Speaking at the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Smriti Irani said, “Sonia Gandhi, you sanctioned the humiliation of Droupadi Murmu. Sonia ji sanctioned humiliation of a woman in the highest constitutional post.” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Irani asked Ranjan to apologise for his remark on the President.

Twenty suspended Rajya Sabha members from Opposition parties are on a 50-hour relay protest inside the Parliament complex against their suspension over unruly behaviour. The parties have refused to apologise to get their suspension revoked. The 20 MPs, suspended over the last two days, include seven from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), six from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), three from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), two from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one each from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The 50-hour protest is likely to end at 1 pm Friday. The Union government, meanwhile, said it would consider revoking the suspension of four other Congress Lok Sabha MPs if the Opposition “guarantees” that their members will not enter the Well of the House and show placards.

The Lok Sabha will take up the Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021 for consideration and passing today, while the Rajya Sabha will discuss The Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022, which became the first Bill to be cleared by the Lok Sabha last week during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.
