On Wednesday afternoon, Sydney airport received a contact from emergency services to respond to a mayday signal made by an approaching Qantas aircraft. According to a spokesman for the ambulance service, the flight designated QF144, was thought to be carrying more than 100 people from New Zealand.
According to television footage from national broadcaster ABC, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft seemed to land successfully at the Sydney airport before coming to a stop on the runway. The twin-engine Boeing 737-800 is capable of making a successful one-engine landing.
A mayday call “indicates an aircraft is in grave and imminent danger and requires rapid assistance according to Australia’s aviation authorities.
After the jet sent out a mayday over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, ambulance had stated that they were on standby at the airport as part of their “emergency activation” procedures.
