The Center has given at least till July 9 to implement the rules related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

In response to a question in Parliament by Congress Lok Sabha MP VK Srikandan, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), came into force on January 10, 2020, but its rules are being formulated.

The Home Ministry said, “Committees of the Subordinate Legislative, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have given time till April 9 and July 9 to implement these rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 respectively.”

MP Srikandan had asked, “Is it a fact that the government is considering implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act very soon and whether the rules under the CAA are still being framed.”

The government also informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs that it has not taken any decision on implementing the National Civil Register (NRC) for the entire country.

The passage of the CAA bill sparked massive protests across the country. The Act facilitates granting Indian citizenship to illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists, or Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and who, after experiencing religious persecution in neighboring countries in 2014, India I entered.

Those opposing the CAA maintain that the law discriminates on the basis of religion and violates the Constitution. The protesters also alleged that the CAA and NRC are meant to target Muslims in India.
