It was previously thought that coffee could negatively affect posture and balance in older adults. However, a new study challenges this belief. Published in Experimental Gerontology, the research examined the impact of coffee on posture control in older adults and revealed surprising results. It found that having a strong cup of coffee now and then may not be as harmful as once believed.

Study: Coffee Has Minimal Effect on Balance in Older Adults
The study involved 22 healthy older adults (12 men and 10 women) with an average age of 68. Participants attended four sessions, where they consumed either caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, a placebo drink, or no fluid. Afterward, they performed balance and posture tests under various conditions, such as standing with their eyes closed or on soft surfaces, while their body’s center of pressure was measured. Physical functions were also recorded, including chair stands, arm curls, a timed walking test, and a step test. Throughout the study, researchers found that coffee had minimal impact on posture and balance in older adults. Participants who drank caffeinated coffee showed performance levels almost identical to those who consumed decaffeinated coffee, a placebo, or no fluid.
A small difference was noted – those who consumed caffeinated coffee made more frequent small balance adjustments compared to the others. However, this did not indicate any significant impact of coffee on posture and balance control.
In their paper, the researchers concluded, “This suggests that coffee has minimal impact on balance performance or physical function but may affect balance complexity and the strategies used to maintain an upright posture. Overall, a strong cup of coffee does not notably affect balance or functional performance in healthy older adults.” Note to readers: This article is intended for informational purposes only and is not a replacement for professional medical advice.
