Her excitement wasn’t just for herself but also for her 2-year-old poodle, Cheddar, as it was his birthday month. The plan was set: a visit to a high-end, pet-friendly hangout street in Gurugram. However, her enthusiasm soon turned into disappointment upon realizing that Cheddar wasn’t allowed inside most of the restaurants, as pets were confined to the outdoor street and faced and untold challenges

    The untold challenges causes problems related to housing

    Koustav highlights how Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and housing society managements often enforce strict and unreasonable rules on pet owners, like mandating that dogs be muzzled even during park walks. Finding pet-friendly housing is another major problem, as many landlords are reluctant to accommodate pets, putting families in difficult positions. For pet parents, this becomes a deeply emotional struggle.

    Need of the hour : Pet parent education

    In the last few years, India has certainly taken measures to become more pet-friendly. Dedicated festivals and events like Pet Fed and Kukur Tihar (an initiative by the Bengaluru municipal department), along with an increasing number of pet-friendly cafes and holiday properties, have gained prominence. Pet parks are also being set up by governments.
