    Atal Setu Not A Picnic Spot : Mumbai Police As People Stop Cars for Selfies

    The Mumbai Police has issued a warning on social media, cautioning people against stopping vehicles on Atal Setu the newly inaugurated Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) for recreational activities, such as taking selfies and pictures. Within days of its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the bridge has witnessed individuals violating rules, littering, and climbing railings to take selfies. Videos and photos of such incidents have circulated on social media, prompting the police to threaten strict action.

    In response to the irresponsible behavior, the Mumbai Traffic Police emphasized that while the Atal Setu is worth admiring, it is illegal to stop vehicles on the bridge for photography. They warned of filing FIRs against those who violate this rule. The police posted pictures of rule-breakers with the caption, ”Atal Setu, Not a 21.8 km long picnic spot.”

    The public’s disregard for cleanliness and order has dismayed many on the internet, with users urging the Mumbai police to take stringent measures, including imposing hefty fines. Some users highlighted instances of three-wheelers riding on the bridge and called for the use of technology, such as HD cameras installed on the bridge, to identify and penalize violators.

    The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, India’s longest sea bridge, aims to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, cutting it from an hour and a half to around 20 minutes. Constructed at a cost of ₹17,840 crore, the 16.5 km-long bridge has six lanes, and certain vehicles, including two-wheelers, auto rickshaws, tractors, and animal-drawn vehicles, are prohibited from using it.
