Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader, Devendra Fadnavis, plans to ask the party leadership to relieve him of his deputy CM duties. This decision follows the BJP’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where their seat count in Maharashtra plummeted from 23 in 2019 to only nine this year.

Fadnavis Accepts Blame, Seeks Focus on Party Rebuilding

Fadnavis, a central figure in Maharashtra’s BJP leadership, has taken full responsibility for the party’s electoral defeat.

“I intend to focus on organizational work to enhance the party’s performance in the upcoming Assembly elections. want to dedicate my time fully to strengthening the organization. I will request the central leadership to relieve me of my state government responsibilities,” Fadnavis announced at a press conference following a review meeting on the Lok Sabha results.

Maharashtra BJP Reviews Election Fallout, Plans Strategy

The meeting, held the day after the election results were releasd, include top BJP leaders such as state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The main focus was to evaluate the party’s performance and plan future strategies. Despite the BJP and its allies winning 17 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, the outcome was a notable decline from the 2019 elections.

In the previous Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had secured 23 seats in Maharashtra. This time, however, the party’s results were eclipsed by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), an alliance of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). The MVA achieved a significant victory, winning 30 seats. Congress experienced a remarkable surge, winning 13 seats compared to just one in 2019. Shiv Sena (UBT) won nine seats, and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) secured eight.

Fadnavis assumed the role of deputy chief minister in the Eknath Shinde-led government on June 30, 2022.
