“A 48-year-old woman succumbed to injuries during treatment. She got injured during the foot overbridge collapse at Balharshah railway station,” District information officer, Chandrapur informed.

At least 13 people were injured after slabs of a foot over-bridge at Balharshah railway junction in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur caved, news agency PTI reported.

According to the report, the incident took place at 5 pm when part of a pre-cast slab in the foot over-bridge, connecting platform 1 and 2 of Balharshah railway junction, collapsed.

“A large number of passengers were using the FoB to board a Pune-bound train, when a part of it suddenly caved in. As a result, some people fell on the railway track below from a height of around 20 feet,” the official of the Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

The people who were on the footbridge fell on the railway tracks below when the incident took place. No train was running on those tracks at that time, as per reports.

Meanwhile, the Railway announced an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the grievously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who sustained minor injuries.

“The injured persons are being given best medical treatment by shifting them to other hospitals for early recovery,” Shivaji Sutar, CPRO CR said.

Notably, the incident comes a month after the Morbi ‘hanging’ suspension footbridge over the Machchu river in Gujarat, collapsed, killing 135 people and injuring several others. The Supreme Court called the incident ‘an enormous tragedy’.
