Maharashtra Declares Cow as ‘Mother of the State’

The Maharashtra government has officially declared the cow as the “Rajya Mata” or “Mother of the State,” recognizing its cultural, religious, and Ayurvedic importance. This order emphasizes the benefits of cow products—milk, urine, and dung—for human health and organic farming, and aims to prevent cow slaughter and smuggling.

In Indian culture, people revere the cow, especially in Hinduism, where they consider it sacred. Mythological beliefs claim that 33 crore deities reside within the cow, and figures like Lord Krishna, known as ‘Gopal’ and ‘Govind,’ show the deep connection between cows and religious faith.

From a health perspective, cow’s milk, ghee, curd, and butter are essential in Ayurveda for the physical and mental development of children. Additionally, Ayurvedic medicine and organic farming actively use cow dung and urine. The practice of Panchgavya Chikitsa uses cow products to treat various ailments.

This decision also comes at a time of rising incidents of cow slaughter and smuggling, which has become a growing concern despite strict laws in place. The move aims to reinforce respect for the cow and encourage better enforcement of these laws.

For years, religious and social groups have been advocating for the cow’s recognition as ‘Rashtramata’ or ‘Rajya Mata.’ This decision is a significant victory for them, and it may inspire other states and even the central government to take similar steps.
