An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 on the Richter Scale hit the west coast of Mumbai on Sunday morning, resulting in mild tremors in Panvel, Kharghar and Navi Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), however, maintained that no complaints of tremors were registered in Mumbai city and suburbs.
According to the data procured from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 and depth of 15 km was recorded at 9.50 am on Sunday, off the west coast of Mumbai. As per the nodal earthquake bureau, the epicentre of the quake was situated at latitude 18.95 degrees and longitude 72.51 degrees.

Mild Earthquake in Navi Mumbai
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sagar Pathak, disaster management officer, Raigad district said, “On Sunday morning, a mild earthquake was reported around 9.50 am. Some people, in the old Panvel and Kamothe area felt the tremors. However, the earthquake being very mild did not result in any loss of life nor property.”
Though no damage was reported, the tremors, which lasted for a few seconds, created panic among residents with many of them sharing experiences on X, formerly Twitter. “In Panvel, around 10 am everything vibrated and could also hear faint sounds of things moving for 3 seconds,” one of the residents wrote.
BMC officials informed Express, stating, “No reports of tremors have been received in the Disaster Cell control room.” On October 4, an earthquake registering 2.8 on the Richter scale was experienced in Raigad district.
