    Biden was to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Kushida Fumio on May 24.

    India, the United States, Japan and Australia – in Sydney next week has been cancelled after US President Joe Biden said he will not be attending.

    In a statement on Tuesday (May 16), the White House said that Biden was cancelling his visits to both Australia and Papa New Guinea because of the ongoing debt ceiling negotiations in Washington. “The President has made clear that members of Congress from both parties and chambers must come together to prevent default, as they have 78 times before. The President and his team will continue to work with Congressional leadership to deliver a budget agreement that can reach the President’s desk,” the statement said.

    On Wednesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that a Quad summit would not go ahead in Sydney next week without US President Joe Biden. Australia, India, Japan and the US are members of Quad.

    Biden postponed his trip to Australia due to debt ceiling negotiations in Washington. Albanese said the leaders of Australia, the United States, India and Japan would instead meet at the G7 in Japan this weekend.

    Quad leaders to hold security summit in Australia’s Sydney on May 24

    The meeting in Sydney on May 24 will be Australia’s first time hosting the Quad Leaders’ Summit. It will also include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

    Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Wednesday he will host President Joe Biden and the leaders of India and Japan for a security summit next week.
