Arundhati Roy wins PEN Pinter Prize 2024

The 2024 PEN Pinter Prize has been award to Arundhati Roy, an annual award established in 2009 by English PEN to commemorate Nobel laureate playwright Harold Pinter. The award will be present to Roy during a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on October 10, where an address will also be deliver by her.

About the PEN Pinter Prize

The PEN Pinter Prize is award annually to a writer of exceptional literary talent residing in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, or the Commonwealth. The prize recognizes those who, in the words of Harold Pinter’s Nobel Prize in Literature speech, maintain an ‘unflinching, unswerving’ perspective on the world and exhibit a ‘fierce intellectual determination’ to uncover the true realities of our lives and societies.

This year’s jury included English PEN chair Ruth Borthwick, actor Khalid Abdalla, and writer Roger Robinson. Notable past recipients of the award include Michael Rosen, Margaret Atwood, Malorie Blackman, Salman Rushdie, Tom Stoppard, and Carol Ann Duffy.

Borthwick Commends Roy for Winning the PEN Pinter Prize 2024

Congratulating Roy, Borthwick praised the author for narrating pressing tales of injustice with both wit and beauty.

“Our congratulations to Arundhati Roy on winning the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. Roy tells urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty. While India remains an important focus, she is truly an internationalist thinker, and her powerful voice is not to be silenced,” Borthwick remark.

Khalid Abdalla praised Arundhati Roy as a luminous voice for freedom and justice, emphasizing her unwavering clarity and determination over nearly three decades. He highlighted the profound impact of her books and writings, which have served as a guiding light through global crises since her debut with ‘The God of Small Things’. Abdalla underscored the crucial role of writers who embody an ‘unflinching and unswerving’ commitment, particularly in times of significant historical challenges like those seen in Gaza this year. He expressed that honoring Arundhati Roy in 2024 celebrates both the enduring integrity of her literary contributions and the timely resonance of her words, crafted with profound insight precisely when the world needs them most.
