    Centre Proposes Ban on Import, Breeding, Selling of 'Ferocious' Dog Breeds

    In reaction to a writ petition lodged in the Delhi High Court by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, OP Chaudhary, has communicated via letter to the chief secretaries of all states and union territories. In the letter, Chaudhary urges the Department of Animal Husbandry, along with local authorities, to ensure that no licenses or permissions are issued for the sale, breeding, and possession of pit bulls and other breeds specifically bred for aggression, often utilized in illegal fighting and attacks.

    Breeds such as pit bull terriers, other terrier breeds of that kind, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasilerio, Dogo Argentino, American bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, different shepherd dogs, Tornjak, Bandog, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa, Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, wolf dogs, Canario, Akbash, and Moscow Guarddog are among the dogs the committee has recommended be banned. This restriction would also apply to mixed and crossbred dog breeds.

    PETA India commends the government’s action

    PETA India applauded the Center for taking this action to protect children and senior citizens who are injured or killed by certain breeds of dogs that are manipulated and trained to view other living things as ‘prey’, as well as vulnerable dog breeds that are frequently used by criminal elements of society for illegal dogfighting.

    Lately, twenty people were injured after being attacked by a stray dog in Ghumarwin area, an official said. Municipal Council Ghumarwin President Rita Sehgal said the dog would suddenly pounce on the people passing by and bite them.

    The incident occurred when a stray dog bit several people within the span of a few hours near Gandhi Chowk in the Ghumarwin market. The injured were sent for treatment at a local hospital and have been administered anti-rabies vaccines, Sehgal added. However, this is not an isolated incident.
