Election Commission adds software to detect ‘ghost voters’ after TMC’s allegations

    The Election Commission of India.

Amid concerns from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) about ‘fake voters’, the Election Commission has introduced a new software feature to detect ‘ghost voters’. According to an official, this tool will help Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) identify cases where multiple voter names are linked to a single EPIC number, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of electoral rolls.

“The chief electoral officers in all states have been notified about this decision,” the official stated. On Monday, a letter was sent to state chief electoral officers regarding a new module designed to correct ‘duplicate EPIC numbers,’ he added.

On Monday, West Bengal’s Acting CEO, Dibyendu Das, met district officials online to discuss the decision. He further informed that corrections in the state’s voter list must be completed by March 21.

    PM Modi hails Election Commission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended India’s “neutral and independent” Election Commission, stating that its handling of the world’s largest democratic process should be studied globally. In a conversation with podcaster Lex Fridman, Modi emphasized the vast scale, complexity, and high political engagement of India’s elections.

“In India, we have a neutral and independent Election Commission that oversees elections and makes all decisions. This is a remarkable achievement, and top universities worldwide should conduct case studies on its management,” he said.

Referring to the 2024 general election, Modi noted that India had 980 million registered voters—more than twice the population of North America and larger than the entire European Union. He added that 646 million citizens participated in voting, despite extreme May temperatures reaching 40°C in some regions.
