    Four Indian medical students drowned in a river near St. Petersburg, Russia, as confirmed by Indian missions in the country on Friday. Efforts are underway in coordination with Russian authorities to repatriate their bodies to their families as soon as possible.

    The four students – two boys and two girls aged 18-20 –  were studying at the nearby Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod city, news agency PTI reported.

    Indian students Rescue Attempt Turns Tragic in Volkhov River

    According to Russian media, a female Indian student ran into trouble after wading into the Volkhov River from the beach. In an attempt to rescue her, four companions entered the river, resulting in the drowning of three of them. Local residents managed to pull a third boy to safety, as reported by local sources.

    The Indian Embassy in Moscow conveyed on X that they are actively coordinating with authorities to expedite the return of the bodies to their families. Additionally, they assured that the surviving student is receiving appropriate medical care.

    Students Were from Veliky Novgorod State University

    The Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg confirm that the students were enroll in medical programs at Veliky Novgorod State University.

    “Sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” the Consulate posted on X.

    The Consulate General also stated that they are collaborating with Veliky Novgorod local authorities to expedite the repatriation of the students’ remains to their families.

    “The bereav families have been contacted and assure of all possible help,” it added.
