500 kg of Crystal Meth Seized from Two Boats in Arabian Sea; Investigation Underway

In a collaborative effort, the Indian Navy and Sri Lankan Navy intercepted two boats in the Arabian Sea, confiscating approximately 500 kg of narcotics (Crystal Meth). The boats, along with the crew and the seized drugs, are being transferred to Sri Lankan authorities for further legal proceedings.

Speaking to PTI, a senior official from the Andaman and Nicobar Tri-Services Command said, “This is the biggest ever seizure which we suspect is linked to big international drug cartels. The total consignment is approximately around 5,500 kg. A total of six Myanmarese crew were arrested with banned crystalline meth. They were handed over to the local police for further interrogation.”

ICG Intercepts Suspicious Vessel Near Barren Island, Seizes Massive Drug Haul Linked to International Cartels

The seizure began on November 23, when the pilot of an ICG Dornier aircraft, during routine patrolling, noticed a suspicious fishing trawler near Barren Island, located nearly 150 km from Port Blair. The trawler, upon being warned, attempted to evade capture, but the Coast Guard swiftly intercepted it, towing the vessel back to Port Blair on November 24 for further investigation.

“I would like to congratulate the ICG for their outstanding effort in apprehending the foreign smugglers braving the rough sea during the operation,” the defence official added. “This effort of the ICG indeed once again proved its commitment towards safeguarding our territorial integrity and preventing the trafficking of illegal substances. The dedication and swift action of our teams involved in ensuring that such illicit activities do not compromise national security.”

While the haul is impressive, it’s the story behind it that gives the seizure a Breaking Bad flavour. Authorities suspect the 5,500 kg of methamphetamine was destined for Thailand, where demand for the drug surges around the festive season. Police are also investigating whether this consignment is tied to major drug cartels, specifically the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (run by El Mencho) or the Chinese El Chapo gang.
