On February 3, 1925, the first electric train in India ran from platform 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) to Kurla in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in railway electrification. This electrification came 72 years after the launch of India’s first-ever train on April 16, 1853.

“The inaugural electric train traveled between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, then known as Victoria Terminus, and Kurla. This was the original version of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, and it departed from platform number 2. It was a pioneering and eco-friendly initiative aimed at bringing lasting change. Today, Central Railway and Indian Railways are celebrating 100 years since the completion of railway electrification,” the CPRO shared with the media.

Railway electrification: Central Railway achieves 100% electrification
In addition to commemorating the centenary of electrification, Central Railway has also achieved 100% electrification. “During this period, Central Railway has successfully completed its full electrification, and to mark this, we are beginning celebrations starting from February 3rd,” added the CPRO.

Activities to be held as part of the celebrations
A variety of events have been arranged to commemorate the centenary, including a run, several seminars, and 3D shows. Nila shared, “The day will begin with a run, followed by a ceremonial commemoration. Simultaneously, technical and other seminars will be held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Later, we will continue with a series of planned activities, including projections and three-dimensional shows.”
