    President Droupadi Murmu has expressed deep dismay and horror over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, marking her first public remarks on the crime. Speaking to PTI, President Murmu condemned the violence, saying “enough is enough” and urging society to confront the chronic issue of violence against women. Her remarks come as nationwide protests continue in response to the discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s body at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The case has ignited widespread outrage, with citizens from various walks of life joining the demonstrations.

    President Murmu criticized the ongoing threat posed by criminals, even as the nation rallies for justice. She emphasized that “no civilised society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities” and stressed the need for “honest, unbiased self-introspection” to address the root causes of such acts. The President also condemned the “deplorable mindset” that views women as lesser beings, lamenting the “collective amnesia” since the 2012 Nirbhaya case. She pointed out that countless rapes have been forgotten and called this amnesia “obnoxious,” urging the nation to confront its history of violence against women head-on.

    President’s Response Raises Concerns on Women’s Safety in Kolkata Case

    The Kolkata incident has sparked renewed criticism of the government’s handling of crimes against women, with many questioning the effectiveness of existing measures. A civic volunteer has been detained in connection with the case, but the victim’s family alleges it was a gang rape involving multiple perpetrators. The Supreme Court has since ordered a national task force to investigate how security for healthcare workers can be improved, describing the incident as one that has “shocked the conscience of the nation.”
