    Three killed in gunfight in Manipur's Ukhrul in clash over cleaning land

    Three people, including a Manipur Rifles personnel, were killed in a gunfight in Ukhrul, Manipur, on Wednesday. The clash occurred over a land cleaning dispute under the Swachhata Abhiyan, a police officer reported.

    Following the clash between residents of Hunphun and Hungpung villages, authorities imposed prohibitory orders and suspended mobile internet services in Ukhrul for one day. The altercation, which also left several people injured, stemmed from a long-standing land dispute.

    The victims were identified as Rifleman Worinmi Thumbra from the 6th Manipur Rifles, along with Reileiwung Hongray and Silas Zingkhai.

    Sub-divisional magistrate of Ukhrul D Kamei said that there was a possibility of law and order problem between the two villages, which may lead to “breach of peace and public tranquility” between both villages.

    “Such disturbances could lead to a serious breach of peace and pose a threat to lives and property,” the magistrate said in the order. Movement outside homes and activities that could disrupt law and order were restricted until further notice.

    Kamei also wrote to the Deputy Inspector General of the 10 Sector Assam Rifles. Requesting immediate deployment of armed forces in Ukhrul. The aim is to assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order.
