    Market Opening Bell: Sensex rises 150+ points, Nifty crosses 22,500; Nifty IT under pressure

    Market Opening Bell: Indian benchmark indices opened on a positive note on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, despite mixed global cues. The BSE Sensex, comprising 30 stocks, began trading at 74,270.81, while the NSE Nifty 50 opened at 22,536.35.

    Sensex and Nifty Open Higher; IndusInd Bank Declines, Bharti Airtel Gains

    The Sensex gained 168.49 points or 0.22 percent in the opening trade, while the Nifty50 rose by 38.45 points or 0.17 percent. In the last trading session on Tuesday, the Sensex closed at 74,102.32, and the Nifty50 ended at 22,497.90.

    In the opening trade, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services, and Tech Mahindra emerged as the biggest laggards from the Sensex pack, with IndusInd losing 7.34 percent. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, and Zomato traded in the green. Bharti Airtel rose by 2.56 percent at the time of writing the report.

    Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a positive start for the Nifty 50 as it opened higher at 22,549.50 against the previous close of 22,518 on Tuesday.

    Global Markets Show Mixed Trends; Nifty Sectoral Indices Mostly in Green

    Meanwhile, Asian markets showed mixed trends today as the US stock market closed lower on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, doubling the planned hike to 50 percent.

    The S&P 500 dropped 1.4 percent in afternoon trading, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 678 points, or 1.6 percent, as of 1:40 pm Eastern Time. The Nasdaq Composite also declined by 1 percent.

    At the time of writing, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index had lost 165.11 points or 0.69 percent, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 had slipped 36.24 points or 0.09 percent. In contrast, South Korea’s Kospi gained 36.24 points or 1.45 percent. Meanwhile, China’s Shanghai Composite traded in the red.

    Major Nifty sectoral indices traded in the green, while Nifty IT declined by 1.45 percent. Nifty Metal rose by 0.41 percent. Similarly, Nifty Bank Index gained 0.29 percent, and Nifty Metal climbed 0.41 percent in the opening trade.
