Mohana Singh Becomes First Woman Pilot in LCA Tejas Fleet

Mohana Singh took part in the recent ‘Tarang Shakti’ exercise in Jodhpur. Where she was involved in a historic flight alongside the three vice chiefs of the armed forces. Squadron Leader Mohana Singh made history by becoming the first woman fighter pilot to join the Indian Air Force’s prestigious 18 ‘Flying Bullets’ squadron. Which operates the indigenous LCA Tejas fighter jets, as reported by ANI on Tuesday.

Mohana Singh participated in the recent ‘Tarang Shakti’ exercise in Jodhpur. Where she took part in a historic flight alongside the three vice chiefs of the armed forces.

She was seen instructing the vice chiefs of the Indian Army and Navy during their flight in the LCA Tejas fighter jet. While Air Force Vice Chief Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh flew solo in the fighter variant of the LCA Tejas. The Army’s Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani and Navy’s Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan flew the trainer variants, accompanied by two fighter pilots.

According to ANI, the exercise was viewed as a significant demonstration of support for the “Make in India” initiative by the defence forces in a coordinated effort.

IAF’s First Women Fighter Pilots: Mohana Singh, Bhawna Kanth, and Avni Chaturvedi Lead in Combat Aviation

Mohana Singh made history in 2016, along with Bhawna Kanth and Avni Chaturvedi. When they became the first women fighter pilots inducted into the Indian Air Force. Though women had been piloting helicopters and transport aircraft in the IAF since 1991. It wasn’t until 2016 that the government allowed women to enter fighter jet cockpits.

Squadron Leaders Bhawna Kanth and Avni Chaturvedi are now flying Su-30 MKI fighter jets in the western desert region. Until recently, Mohana Singh was flying MiG-21s and has now been assigned to the LCA squadron stationed. At the Naliya air base in Gujarat, near the Pakistan border.

Hailing from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan, Mohana Singh has a strong aviation background her grandfather served as a flight gunner in the Aviation Research Centre. And her father is a warrant officer in the Indian Air Force.
