Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of people who died after falling into a drainage canal in Kandukuru, Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district, during former Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s roadshow on Thursday. A stampede occurred during a TDP event in Kandukuru on Wednesday evening, killing eight people and injuring eight more.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sympathy to the bereaved families. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Pained by the mishap at a public meeting in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs 50,000”.
The death toll rose to eight on Wednesday night as one more victim of a stampede that occurred during a TDP event in Kandukuru town in Nellore district, passed away while undergoing treatment.
The victims, including two women, died and eight others were injured on Wednesday after falling into a drainage canal while TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu was addressing a roadshow in Kandukuru town. The event drew a large crowd, and there was some jostling among the attendees during the meeting, resulting in a stampede-like situation at the canal.
TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu abruptly came to a halt after the incident. People who were injured during the roadshow were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, Naidu promised tens of lakhs of rupees in financial assistance and education for the bereaved workers’ children through the NTR Trust
