Government Approves PAN 2.0: Key Features, Benefits, and Details

The Union Cabinet has approved the much-awaited PAN 2.0 project, marking a significant milestone in the government’s push towards a digitally empowered India. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the nod to the Income-Tax Department’s proposal for a modernized PAN system on November 25, 2024.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the project’s approval, highlighting its transformative potential for businesses and taxpayers. PAN 2.0 is set to bring a paperless and fully online system, upgrading the existing PAN ecosystem while introducing new features for better service delivery.

Key Highlights of PAN 2.0

1. Massive Investment: The government has allocated ₹1,435 crore to implement the PAN 2.0 project.
2. Tech-Driven Transformation: The initiative aims to revolutionize taxpayers’ registration services through advanced digital technology, improving speed, quality, and ease of access.
3. Benefits to Users:

• Faster and more efficient service delivery.
• Improved cybersecurity measures for safeguarding user data.

• Enhanced data consistency, acting as a single source of truth for PAN/TAN data.

1. System Upgrade: PAN 2.0 will replace the current PAN/TAN 1.0 ecosystem, streamlining core and non-core activities and enhancing the PAN validation process.
2. Grievance Redressal: A new and improved grievance redressal system will cater to user queries, ensuring a seamless experience for taxpayers and businesses.
3. Integration with Digital India: Under the Digital India initiative, PAN will now function as a common identifier across various government digital systems, further simplifying compliance for businesses and individuals.
4. Widespread Usage: Currently, 78 crore PAN cards have been issued, with 98% being held by individuals.

Who Needs to Apply?

Union Minister Vaishnaw clarified that existing PAN card holders do not need to apply for a new card or make changes. PAN 2.0 upgrades the system without requiring users to take additional steps.
