Supreme Court Overturns Previous Ruling on MP and MLA Immunity
A seven-member constitutional bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud unanimously overturned the 1998 decision great made by a five-member bench in the JMM bribery case. This previous ruling had granted Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) immunity from prosecution for accepting bribes in exchange for delivering speeches or voting in the legislature.
