PM Modi Meets Brunei Sultan Today At Luxury Palace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is undertaking a landmark state visit to Brunei, making it the first time an Indian prime minister has visited the Southeast Asian country. Following his time in Brunei, PM Modi will continue his tour to Singapore, completing a two-nation trip.

Meeting with the Sultan of Brunei

On the second day of his historic state visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. The Sultan, who is the second-longest reigning monarch globally and was once the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of around $30 billion, engaged in extensive talks with PM Modi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding trade, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges. PM Modi shared details of their meeting on X, highlighting the intent to deepen cooperation across various sectors.

Celebrating 40 Years of Diplomatic Ties

This landmark visit marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. PM Modi and the Sultan discussed key areas of cooperation, including defence, trade, investment, energy, space technology, and health. The two nations are expected to sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) as a part of this visit. Following their discussions, PM Modi was hosted for a banquet lunch at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, the world’s largest palace, renowned for its grandeur with 1,788 rooms and 257 bathrooms.

Upcoming Visit to Singapore and Local Engagements

After concluding his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will travel to Singapore. In Singapore, he is scheduled to meet members of the Indian community and be hosted for dinner by Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Earlier in his Brunei visit, PM Modi explored the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission. He also interacted with local officials, scholars, and the Indian community, showcasing a strong engagement with both nations.
