    The Central government has selected Sadanand Vasant Date, the head of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), to serve as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Additionally, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has named two new Directors General for the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

    MHA Approves Repatriation of P.V. Ramasashtry & Date Appointed NIA DG

    The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also given its approval to the request for the early repatriation of P V Ramasashtry, a 1989-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, who currently serves as the Special Director General of the Border Security Force.

    A deputy secretary in the Central Government issued an order on March 26 approving the appointment of Sadanand Vasant Date, a 1990-batch IPS officer from the Maharashtra cadre. He will serve in the position of Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from the date of assuming office until his retirement on December 31, 2026, or until further notice, whichever comes first.

    Date’s Heroism During the 2008 Mumbai Terror Attacks

    Date was among the initial group of officers who arrived at a location during the November 26, 2008, terrorist attacks in Mumbai. During the gunfire exchange, Date actively participated in a counter-operation and sustained injuries. His courageous actions and quick thinking in dire circumstances rescue numerous citizens who were being held hostage by Abu Ismail and Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist capture alive by Mumbai police. In recognition of his bravery, Date, a senior police official, subsequently received the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.

    ACC Appoints Piyush Anand as Director General of NDRF

    The ACC has also designated Piyush Anand, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre who currently serves as the Special Director General in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), as the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). According to the order, this appointment involves temporarily elevating the position of DG, NDRF to the rank of DG on a personal basis for a duration of two years from the commencement of his tenure in the role or until further instructions are provided, whichever occurs first.
