Google Maps, a widely utilized navigation app in India, has faced criticism for prioritizing advanced features for countries like the UK and Europe, leaving Indian users with a comparatively limited experience. In response, Google is working to bridge this gap by introducing features previously unveiled for other markets, aiming to enhance the user experience in India.
One notable feature set to launch in 2024 for Android users in India is Address Descriptors. Recognizing the local preference of guiding others using landmarks such as temples, ATMs, or small grocery shops, Google Maps will now automatically identify up to five relevant landmarks and area names near a pinned address. When users share their location, these landmarks will be displayed, adding a local touch to navigation. The introduction of this feature showcases Google’s effort to integrate regional nuances and enhance the functionality of Google Maps for Indian users.

AI-Powered Real-Time Traffic Tracking and Fuel-Efficient Routes
You might have heard that Maps helps people save money while travelling, and Google is bringing this feature for users in India. The company is using AI to track the traffic in real time, and also see the kind of roads you will be taking, which includes flyovers that take more out of the car or bike to help you save fuel.
“For example, hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in stop-and-go traffic, while diesel engines use less fuel at higher speeds. This helps save fuel and encourage sustainable route choices, without significantly impacting travel time,” Google highlights its purpose. The good thing about this feature in India is that Maps will be compatible with cars and bikes, which is crucial for one of the biggest two-wheeler markets in the world. Once again, expect the feature to roll out in January.
Lens Integration on Google Maps
Lens is a powerful visual tool that has been available on Chrome, Search and more. Now, users in India will have its capability on Maps. “Simply point your camera down the street and you will instantly see nearby restaurants and cafes, as well as useful information like opening hours, ratings, reviews and photos,” the blog post adds. Lens means Google is optimising its Street View features in the country and directing people to different stores, cafes with details is a clear upgrade on the existing options for millions. Google is bringing Lens to Maps in 15 cities by January 2024, starting with Android users.
Live View Walking Integration
Another integration of Street View is made possible in live view walking which basically means you can virtually get navigation steps from Maps while walking on the street. You will get arrows on the phone’s screen telling when to take a turn, and even vibrate to get your attention. Google says it is also using AI and AR tech to bring this live walking feature, which is coming to 3000 cities using Android phones in the coming months.
