A 50-year-old American woman was discovered in a jungle in Sindhudurg district of southern Maharashtra with her leg chained to a tree. Police suspect she had been there for almost 48 hours before a shepherd heard her cries and notified them.
The police have recovered a photocopy of her US passport and an Aadhaar card that identifies her as Lalita Kayi and carries a Tamil Nadu address. She is not in a condition to talk and has been moved to a Goa hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

Woman Rescued in Sindhudurg Jungle
An officer said the police also found in her bag a note in which she had scribbled “my former husband”. “We have found that the woman, who appears to have been born in the US, had also resided in Goa for some time. We are trying to find out whom she was in touch with in the past few months,” the officer added.
The officer reported that a shepherd heard the woman’s cries for help on the evening of July 27 in Sonurli village, Sawantwadi, over 450 km from Mumbai. He alerted the police, who then broke the chain and rescued her. She was initially taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi and later transferred to another local hospital.

Transferred to Goa Medical College for Advanced Treatment
Due to her deteriorated physical and mental condition, she was subsequently moved to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment. Although she is now out of danger, doctors informed the police that she might be suffering from psychiatric issues. A medical prescription was also found with her.
The police said her visa had expired and suspect that she has been in India for the past 10 years.
An officer said the woman was not in a position to give a statement as she was weak owing to dehydration and not having eaten anything in the past couple of days.
