    On World Wildlife Day, PM Narendra Modi reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to safeguarding and conserving the country’s abundant biodiversity.

    Taking to X, PM Modi shared a message emphasising the importance of wildlife conservation. “Today, on World Wildlife Day, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role — let’s safeguard their future for generations to come!”

    “We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife,” he added.

    PM Modi Visit to Sasan Gir

    To support wildlife conservation, the Prime Minister is visiting Sasan Gir, Gujarat, home to the Asiatic lion. His visit aligns with this year’s theme, ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,’ emphasizing sustainable funding and community involvement in conservation.

    The Prime Minister is visiting Sasan Gir, Gujarat, home to the Asiatic lion, aligning with this year’s theme, ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,’ highlighting sustainable funding and community involvement.

    Gujarat’s Efforts in Lion Conservation

    Gujarat leads in lion conservation with efforts to protect and expand the Asiatic lion’s habitat.

    Currently, these majestic big cats inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometres, spanning 53 talukas in nine districts of the state. The Gujarat government has set up a 20.24-hectare National Referral Centre for Wildlife in Junagadh and introduced advanced facilities like a wildlife monitoring centre and a veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi praised the collaborative efforts of the Police and Forest Department in protecting wildlife.

    In 2024, Gujarat recruited 237 beat guards to enhance surveillance and protect the Gir Protected Area, supporting the conservation of Asiatic lions and other endangered species. The ‘Gir Samvad Setu’ initiative has also held over 300 community programs to promote conservation awareness.

    Additionally, nine breeding centres have been established to preserve herbivorous species essential for maintaining the balance of the Gir ecosystem.
