Former Calcutta High Court judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay officially joined the BJP on March 7, 2024, in Kolkata, in the presence of BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

Former Judge Joins BJP, Vows to Combat Corruption and Serve Party Duties
During the event, Mr. Gangopadhyay expressed his commitment to the party’s cause, emphasizing the importance of preventing a return to power by what he referred to as a corrupt political party in the state. He was welcomed by BJP State party president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, and he stated his readiness to undertake any responsibilities entrusted to him by the BJP.

Former Judge’s Political Transition Sparks Controversy and Speculation
During his tenure as a judge at the Calcutta High Court, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay oversaw numerous cases concerning corruption in the recruitment processes of state-operated schools. He notably issued directives for investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in over a dozen such cases.
Now that the former judge has entered active politics, the leadership of the Trinamool Congress has raised concerns about potential political bias behind Justice Gangopadhyay’s rulings. There are speculations within political circles that the BJP might nominate him as a candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state.
