Despite earlier forecasts predicting a clear majority for the ruling party, the Liberals and Conservatives fought a tight race. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to remain in office, but by late Monday night, even after officials counted results from nearly all ridings, he had not secured a definite majority. Analysts had projected a dominant win for Carney’s party ahead of election day, but the final numbers painted a different picture.
The Liberals and Conservatives finished within a narrow margin of less than three percent in vote share. This close result defied expectations and revealed the highly competitive nature of the race across the country. Although Carney will retain power, he now faces the likelihood of leading a minority government. Voters acted in ways that pre-election surveys failed to predict.

The Conservatives gained more than a dozen seats in Ontario, which—with 121 ridings—represents the largest share in the country.
