The Maharashtra excise department canceled the permit to serve alcohol at actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Pune’s Kothrud area on Sunday evening. An official from the department confirmed the decision, which came just hours before the event was set to take place.

The move followed a series of objections from various groups and individuals regarding the decision to allow alcohol at the event. Concerns were raised about the cultural and social implications of serving liquor during such a public gathering.

Among the prominent voices opposing the plan was Chandrakant Patil, the newly elected BJP MLA from Kothrud. Patil, along with others, expressed strong reservations about the idea of serving alcohol at the concert, emphasizing the potential negative impact on local traditions and community values.

The cancellation highlights the sensitivity surrounding the organization of public events in India, where societal norms and political considerations often play a significant role in determining the approval of certain activities. It underscores the balance event organizers must strike between entertainment, regulations, and public sentiment.

State Excise Commissioner C. Rajput stated that the department had officially withdrawn the permit allowing the serving of alcohol at the event. Various parties, including public and political representatives, raised concerns about serving liquor during the program, prompting the decision.

Patil raised concerns about the cultural and social impact of such events. His objections ultimately led to the cancellation of the alcohol permit.

The BJP leader said such events do not align with the city’s cultural values and could significantly disrupt local residents’ lives. Highlighting concerns about potential traffic congestion and inconvenience, he urged the city police commissioner to call off the event.
