Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the contributions of former ex-PM Manmohan Singh to Parliament and the nation during his farewell address to retiring members in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

“I want to highlight Dr. Manmohan Singh’s immense contribution today… The way he has guide this House and country for such a long time, Dr. Manmohan Singh will always be remember for it,” Modi said.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar’s residence will host a farewell for retiring Rajya Sabha members on Thursday. Members of the Rajya Sabha took part in a group photo at 10am at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Later at 6.30 pm, they will attend the farewell function for retiring members at the chairman’s residence at 6, Maulana Azad Road.

Modi recall an incident in the old Parliament building during a trust vote against the government, noting that although it was expected that the treasury bench would win, Dr. Manmohan Singh arrive in his wheelchair and cast his vote. This an example of a member being alert of his duties”.

“Dr Manmohan Singh ji came to Parliament in a wheelchair. Modi noted Dr. Manmohan Singh’s sense of responsibility, emphasizing that Singh actively participated in committee elections by casting his vote whenever they took place. Modi emphasized that Singh’s intention was not merely to support a particular candidate but to strengthen democracy as a whole.

In August 2023, Manmohan Singh had arrived in Rajya Sabha on a wheelchair to cast his vote on the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Modi extended his best wishes to all the retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, expressing hope that they would achieve greater heights after their education in this “eternal university.”

“I hope the experience of retiring MPs will benefit the country and inspire new generations,” Modi added.
