On Thursday morning, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reacted to a report claiming his aide was apprehended at the Delhi airport for smuggling 500 grams of gold, saying the law must take its own course. Shashi Tharoor stated that the man is a former member of his staff. He mentioned that the individual was employed part-time to provide “airport facilitation assistance.”

Shashi Tharoor Clarifies Employment and Stance on Alleged Wrongdoing

Tharoor explained that the 72-year-old had been hired due to compassionate reasons, as he was undergoing frequent dialysis. Nonetheless, Tharoor made it clear that he does not support any alleged misconduct.

“I was shocked to hear of an incident involving a former member of my staff who has been rendering part-time service to me in terms of airport facilitation assistance. He is a 72-year-old retiree undergoing frequent dialysis and was retained on a part-time basis on compassionate grounds. I do not condone any alleged wrongdoing and fully support the authorities in their efforts to take any necessary action as may be required to investigate the matter. The law must take its own course,” he wrote on X.

Airport Incident Unveils Alleged Gold Smuggling Operation

Prasad arrived at the airport to pick up someone arriving from Dubai. Both Prasad and the other person were caught when the latter tried to pass the gold to the MP’s aide.

According to sources cited by the agency, Prasad had permission to enter the airport, granting him access to its premises. Allegedly, he entered the airport and received the package. Authorities reportedly found 500 grams of gold in their possession. Meanwhile, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar made a pointed comment about the Congress and CPM’s national-level partnership, labeling them as a coalition of “gold smugglers”.
