In recent months, comedian Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent has gained significant attention, with many praising it as a much-needed addition to the industry. Clips from the show, known for its dark humor and explicit language—hallmarks of Raina’s style—frequently went viral.

However, on Sunday, a brief clip featuring YouTuber-podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia making an inappropriate remark triggered widespread backlash on social media.

Following this, a police complaint was filed against Raina, Allahbadia, influencer Apoorva Mukhija, and the show’s organizers. The complaint, submitted to the Mumbai police commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, accused them of making obscene and derogatory comments about women for publicity and financial gain. It also called for strict legal action and an immediate halt to the show’s broadcast, according to news agency ANI.

Allahbadia’s remarks ignited outrage, bringing intense scrutiny to the show and its host, Raina, whose comedic approach has often pushed the boundaries between humor and controversy.

Samay Raina was born in Jammu and Kashmir into a Kashmiri Pandit family. At 16, he began uploading comedy videos on YouTube to pursue his passion.

He later enrolled in a print engineering program at PVG’s COET in Pune, Maharashtra, but found it unfulfilling. Seeking a creative outlet, he started performing at open mic events, with his first appearance in August 2017. Over time, he gained experience by opening for established comedians like Anirban Dasgupta and Abhishek Upmanyu in Pune.

Encouraged by comedian Aakash Gupta, Raina participated in Comicstaan 2, ultimately winning the competition alongside Gupta.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned to streaming chess content on YouTube, collaborating with renowned players and influencers. His first guest was YouTuber Antonio Radic (Agadmator), followed by Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi. Over time, he built connections with chess legends such as Viswanathan Anand, Anish Giri, and Teimour Radjabov. His streams also featured world-class players like Magnus Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik, and Judit Polgar.

Raina also organized several online chess tournaments, including the Comedians on Board (COB) series, which attracted celebrities like cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal. In 2021, he won the $10,000 Botez Bullet Invitational hosted by Chess.com.

As a co-founder of the Chess Super League (CSL), launched in collaboration with ChessBase India and Nodwin Gaming, he helped establish a high-stakes tournament featuring top Indian and international players, with a prize pool of ₹40 lakh.

In June 2024, Raina introduced India’s Got Latent, a reality show critiquing hidden talent, which quickly gained traction among young audiences. Following its success, he launched an India’s Got Latent app, offering unfiltered content, which topped the Apple App Store and Google Play Store charts.

With over 10 million followers across social media, Samay Raina is now gearing up for an international tour.
