The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the historic Bill that will reserve one-third of seats for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, following a thorough debate among MPs across party lines. The Bill was passed with a majority voting by all the members of the House: 215 votes in favor and no one against it. Concluding the discussion on the Bill — the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This bill will lead to a new confidence in the people of the country. It also shows the positive thinking of all the political parties which will give new energy to women’s empowerment.”

Bill passed to reserve 33% of seats for women
The day before, paving the way for the historic legislation, the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India’s parliament) had overwhelmingly passed the women’s reservation Bill with strong support: 454 votes in favor, and just two from the AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen) against it. Concluding the discussion on the Bill, Union Home Minister Shah reassured the Lower House about ensuring a “transparent process” for identifying seats reserved for women.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to Members of Parliament from various political parties for their affirmative votes in favor of the women’s reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “I am thrilled with the overwhelming support for The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha. I extend my heartfelt thanks to MPs from all political parties who voted in favor of this Bill. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is a momentous legislation that will further enhance women’s empowerment. It will facilitate increased participation of women in our political processes.”
