Bangladesh Protests: Sheikh Hasina To Return To Bangladesh For Elections, Says Son

Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will return to her country once the new caretaker government announces election dates, according to her son.

After fleeing to India on Monday due to weeks of violent protests that led her to resign, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to return to Bangladesh once the new caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, schedules elections. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who is based in the US, told the Times of India, “Currently, she (Hasina) is in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government announces election plans.”

Awami League Out of Interim Government; Hasina in New Delhi, Asylum Reports Unconfirmed

Hasina’s Awami League party does not feature in the interim government, following a student-led uprising against the long-time former prime minister whose exit came after nationwide violence killed about 300 people and injured thousands.

She is currently staying in a safe house in the New Delhi area. While Indian media reports suggest she may seek asylum in Britain, the British Home Office has not commented on this.

Joy also indicated that he is open to entering politics if necessary, stating, “I am confident that the Awami League will participate in the election, and we could potentially win.”
